Late last week, I made the mistake of leaving an all-but-empty travel mug of tea on my desk overnight. Sure enough, by the next morning, the ants had discovered the treat.
I cleaned up the mug and the ants that were immediately visible on my desk. Since it took several minutes for more ants to appear, I decided to take on the task myself of killing them as I see them.
This is my second or third day at the task. The appearance of ants is slowing. With perseverance in the war and a careful guard against sweets, I am hopeful that in another couple of days, it will once again be the exception to see an ant crawling around in my office, rather than the expected.
Maybe I should ask an ant expert. How long do ants return to the site of food that has been removed? How much of a deterrence is the killing of the ants? I haven't yet established the location of their trail onto my desk. I assume if I could locate and obliterate their scent trail that it would deter their scouting. What sort of cleaning would it take to obliterate their trail?

Hmm... found this idea online: Commercially available sticky repellents or petroleum jelly can be applied in a narrow band around table legs to prevent ants from walking up to the tabletop. Double-sided tape can also be used.
I haven't gotten to try this myself to see how well it works. But I just heard that corn meal will slowly kill the ants. They can't digest it I guess.
