Friday evening, I attended a Sterling Playmakers' performance of a Midsummer Night's Dream. I went with a couple of friends from the college.
For this production, the play was set in the 1830's on the grounds of Oatlands Plantation, which is celebrating its 200th year, and surrounding locations. Other than the references to local place names scattered throughout the script, which I found rather jarring, the performance was entertaining and provoked much laughter. The scene with all four of the lovers in which both of the gentlemen are under the influence of the love-juice, there was a generous portion of well choreographed fighting to emphasize the conflicts between each set of characters. All of the costumes were colorful and well used to help set the play. Oberlon's and Titania's costumes were particularly interesting with Oberlon in forest oranges with gold, contrasting and coordinating with Titania's silver dress with meadow-flower blue cape.
Sterling Playmakers will be performing Guys and Dolls this summer. I'm looking forward to hopefully being able to see the production.
