Auto X Prize

The X Prize Foundation believes in "revolution through competition"--sponsoring competitions with large purses to spur competitors to achieve more than has been done before.

Their Automotive X Prize is looking for a car that can average 100MPG--and that can be mass-produced at a competitive price within a few years. The rules are still being finalized. The X Prize will be awarded following a stage race in 2009. The foundation hopes that the innovations and technology generated by the competition might be integrated into existing car designs in perhaps as little as a year following the prize.
