It is March, but we finally got some snow here in Virginia for the winter.
Saturday night, we got a little bit. Really not more than a skiff that mostly melted during the day. But more was predicted for Sunday night and Monday morning. The predictions called for 2-9", depending on how far east. I-95 and east (right along the coast) is apparently getting hit the hardest. Farther west where we are is definitely toward the lesser end.
Waking up this morning, there was about 4" of snow on the ground. With hopes that the college was on a snow schedule, I checked my phone only to find a message that the campus was running under normal operations. I went out and cleared my car. I was the first to move my car from the parking area where I was. Our side street hadn't been cleared by any plows, but had been pretty well traveled by others.
Streets in town had been plowed and treated, but were still slushy--seeing any lane-dividing lines was impossible. Few enough people were traveling (and those that were knew the area), so guessing where the left-hand turn lanes were supposed to be wasn't too bad.
Out on the highway, traffic going my direction is always very light. That makes it easy on mornings like this for people to pick their own speeds without impeding traffic too much. I think I saw the whole range of speeds between 23-55 this morning. Leaving Leesburg, the highway was almost all slushy, just a couple of mostly clear spots of tire tracks in the right hand lane. Between the Rt 9 exit and Hamilton, the highway went from mostly slushy to mostly clear pretty dramatically. By the time I had arrived in Purcellville, there was only spots of sand and maybe slight slush along the lane dividing line, otherwise the road appeared wet, but clear. It was obvious that there had been significantly lees snow this much farther west--there was still grass showing in the median. On-campus, the road and parking areas were pretty well cleared and treated, though they certainly still had thin layers of snow in areas. The wind was a bit more noticable.
A report from Harper's Ferry is that they had almost no snow.
