John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

I'm working on memorizing John chapter 1 right now. Of course, verse 1 is a verse I've had memorized for years. Probably memorized it in Sunday School or VBS, when I memorized as many verses as they would give me for whatever prizes they were giving out--stickers on the chart or balloons to be released.

But what does this verse mean? It is a declaration of who the Word, Jesus Christ, is--one who has existed since before the beginning of time, one who shared in the creation experience, one who IS God. In Genesis, the entire existence of the world and universe as we know it came into being just by God's spoken word. And with that same power, He is in control of all that happens to those who love Him for their good. When I remember such awesome power is guiding the events around me, I know I must give up my petty worrying and praise Him.
