Samson

While I was home over Christmas, I picked up the jawbone of a bull that died more than four years ago and brought it back with me. Sunday evening at Awana, it was my turn to tell a story to the 5-7 year old Sparks.

Having toted the jawbone half-way across the country with exactly this purpose in mind, I reviewed the story of Samson on Sunday afternoon. I decided to tell the part of the story where the angel visits Manoah and his wife to fortell the birth of Samson. Ask the kids about what they remember of the story of Samson. Then tell the piece of the story where Samson is arrested, then kills the Philistines with the jawbone. Philip (a fellow leader) had said that he would like to act out the part of Samson in the story. So I was thinking I would have a few of the kids help out act out the story too.

About 30 minutes before I left for Awana, I thought, "I've got the jawbone, wouldn't it be good to have a few other props to help out with the acting?" So, in the next 30 minutes, I dug out a walking stick for Manoah, several pieces of fabric that could be used as head coverings and sashes by Manoah's wife and the soldiers, some Christmas garland for the angel, and some lightweight cord for the rope. (Now if I could only justify the rest of the "stuff" I have packed away. :)

The story time went well. The kids seemed to enjoy the story and the acting. They were very impressed when the jawbone came out.

After Awana, I drove home in a beautiful snow fall. The flakes swirled around the car, just like the falling flakes in a snow globe. When I got home, they had just begun to accumulate. We only got a dusting, but it was beautiful while it lasted.

Freezing temperatures all week with more snow expected Wednesday through the end of the week.
