Yesterday, I wrote up this great post about the book donation I went and picked-up on Wednesday. But I lost it when I tried to post it while a blogger server was down. So, without nearly the depth of detail, I'll re-cap the main points. (Which will probably mean it's a leaner, easier-to-read post.)
Wednesday afternoon, I drove down to Alexandria to pick up a donation of books for the library. Two men from maintenance took down the van to help with boxing up the books and bringing them back. The books were the personal collection of a man (I think a doctor) who had a variety of interests, but his widow no longer had the space for the collection. One of the rooms had three bookshelves of science books--medicine, astronomy, space travel, and nature. Other books in the collection (there were at least six other bookcases of books) were more closely related to our majors and collection--literature, drama, history, and government. In total, we packed up 47 boxes of books. We didn't make a count, but I'm estimating 1,000-1,500 books in the donation.
A slightly ironic piece of the day was realizing that this donation was less than a mile from another donation I picked up last May. Most of that distance is a reflection of how far off the main road one of the homes was. The streets were only a couple of blocks apart--on either side of a school site.
