Tech Day

Today, without any planning, turned out to be very techie. There are days when technology works and there are days when it doesn't. Yesterday was one of those days that it mostly worked, but was just a little buggy.

Before I arrived, someone had reported that a library request form on the web wasn't working. In fixing the problem, we couldn't figure out why it's sister form WAS working, so we "fixed" both. Now they both work the same way--and quite a bit cleaner.

About the same time, a new barcode scanner was installed. We decided that it scanned one kind of barcode (if we held the scanner EXACTLY right), another kind it just refused to read (despite specifications), and another kind it read most of the time, I think. We walked away from it when we got frustrated and will have to look at it again today.

Then late in the afternoon, a major portion of the library website--Electronic Resources--quit working. It was readily fixed, as it was only a misplaced file that had gotten moved in some website clean-up.

While the E-Resources were down, I discovered that my normal work-around no longer worked. Trying to fix the work-around in follow-up broke more important functions, so the work-around just isn't available for now.

In fixing the E-Resources problem, I brought back up for discussion an old request. He agreed that it would not be a problem to do, now that he has a fuller understanding of the network and files involved.

After I got home, I picked up my computer and some equipment that is supposed to help me get better Internet access at my house. Except it didn't work at all when I plugged it in last night. Since I'm not sure on the details of the network set-up, I've had to wait to consult the guy who does know, but I think it's just a minor setting problem.
