Since the airlines have started charging for checked luggage, JM and I made a point of packing in one checked bag. I packed my clothes first, so they ended up in the bottom layer of the suitcase. I made sure to put my dress shoes in with the slip-in toe pads inside the correct shoe. Jesse packed later, so his clothes ended up as a top layer, neatly folded and right-side out. He packed some Warhammer items, being sure to pack them in the center of the clothes with layers between them.
Once we opened our luggage in Kansas, we weren't sure why we bothered with packing neatly. Security had obviously hand-searched our luggage and very much re-packed the bag.
- The first thing we noticed was that the Warhammer items were both sitting right on top of all the clothes when we opened the suitcase.
- We then had to take the time to sort out the entire suitcase of items, as his clothes and my clothes were thoroughly mixed up.
- Sunday morning when I went to put on my dress shoes, the slip-in toe pads were in the wrong shoes (not the way I had packed them).
- Sometime in the week, JM found that some of his clothes had been turned wrong-side out.
Fortunately, as far as we could tell, nothing was completely missing and nothing was damaged. But it was definitely a reminder that checked luggage is subject to anything!
