Old-Timer

My status as a "long-time" employee of the college is seeming to get emphasized today.

This morning, JM stopped by my office to ask me about some history behind a trend of comments he was seeing in alumni surveys.

Just after lunch, I had a meeting with one of the tech guys. Essentially, I was training him in some of his responsibilities for the library. Well, maybe not so much training as explaining some of my e-mailed requests--how they fit into and affect the library's services to students. The kind of explanation that only has to be done once...until the responsibility gets passed onto someone else. This was at least the third time I was going through one section of the explanations. ...And then there is our proxy server. I've lost track of how many times I've had to explain various aspects of that, as primary responsibility for the server has been passed off at least six times in just over four years. Plus when I've had to make explanations when changes or problems intersected with the PHC website, ISP changes, DL options, and other considerations.

As any librarian knows, whether or not it's written into the job description, the job entails maintaining relations with I.T. personnel and taking the time to make sure they understand the library's technology needs.

Added Note: And continuing my earlier point about being an "old-timer," I was asked later in the day about the arrangement of the artwork in the library. And yes, I was there and helped arrange it.
