Microsoft Shuttering Book Digitization Efforts

Microsoft Shuttering Book Digitization Efforts:

While Google's book digitization project may have gotten more press, Microsoft has also been digitizing nearly three-quarters of a million books and journal articles. Microsoft had Live Search Books and Live Search Academic as a parallel to Google's Google Books and Google Scholar searches. Microsoft has ceased digitizing materials and is eliminating the specialized searches of that material.

It makes me curious how Microsoft reached this decision. Is it giving up on competing with Google in the search arena? How is this related to their failed take-over of Yahoo?

Guess we'll just have to keep watching the news.
