Week & Weekend

Tuesday evening I drove down to Roanoke to spend Wednesday and Thursday more about repairing books. Building on the skills learned in basic book repair, we re-cased a book (removed the cover and put it back on), created a wrapper to protect a fragile book, and made a cover for a pamphlet. In putting the cover back onto the book, we learned about sewing a book together. We actually only sewed a couple of sections, but to realize that the level of work that was required in previous eras (and for certain books even now) to hand-sew entire books added perspective for the value of books. If I could now only find time to use what I've learned, I have more than four boxes of books needing repairs.

Good news at work: I have an interview on Monday for someone to possibly take the library assistant position.

This weekend, I sorted through the donation of 700 books from a local conservative organization. It was a really good donation, in that practically all the books were published in the last 25 years--a few of them even had 2005 publication dates--and a very high percentage of the books fall in the areas related to our majors.
