Now that I have responsibilities out of the way, I can take the time to tell you about the taste of home I got yesterday.
As I was at home working on my report, I heard an odd noise outside. The cause? A cow was trying to scratch herself on one of the evergreens in my front yard. Now, as this particular evergreen is not yet 10' tall and isn't even 3' across branch-tip to branch-tip, the poor little tree was certainly suffering the worst from this encounter.
By the time I grabbed shoes and a jacket, the cow had given up her torture of the now half-denuded tree. Mark and Megan had also arrived home at this time and Megan had come down the drive. The cow had wandered toward the barn and then headed across their back yard. Megan and I headed across the yard after the cow with some small hope of getting her to turn down across the creek and into her pasture. Instead, she turned up through a brushy area and headed across another yard for Main Street. As I was still wearing hose (despite having grabbed a pair of tennis shoes for the chase), I decided not to scramble through the brush, but simply watched the cow disappear over the hill in the next yard.
At this point, Mark arrived to the rescue. He grabbed a tree branch for waving at the cow and headed after her. A minute later, the cow re-apppeared headed back toward us with Mark herding behind. Once the cow came back through the brushy area, I followed her back down toward the pasture and watched her across the partially-downed fence.
Then it was back to work on the report.
When I arrived home from clogging, I found the cow had chosen my back yard as her bed for the night. She wasn't currently threatening any trees or traffic, so I let her be. Oh well.
