Went into the endodontist this morning for the root canal retreatment. He got started drilling and it started hurting me. Since the previous root canal had removed the nerve, there shouldn't have been any pain. To quote the dentist, "This is a very bad sign." With a little further exploration, he decided there was a crack in the tooth. He felt like it wasn't worth it or fair (time, expense) for him to "fix" the tooth when with the crack there were bound to be further problems. He put a temporary filling in the tooth to fill what he had done and promised to send a report back to my regular dentist recommending the tooth be extracted.
Before the endodontist started work, I mentioned that I felt like my bite was off--can't get my left molars to meet without biting down on the problem tooth--and asked if that was normal. He just said something like, "Yes, the bite could be off." As he was wrapping up, he commented that the crack in the tooth could be causing fluids to build up behind there and could be what was causing the tooth to be out of line and affecting the bite.
Since I already had a referral to get my wisdom teeth extracted, I checked with my regular dentist about getting all three extracted at once and got the go ahead on that. So I called the oral surgeon and am scheduled for a consult on Monday afternoon. (I'm "over 30" so they "have" to do a consult first.)
