MONDAY
The first day of classes. I show up at work at 7:30 to make sure the library is open, since the student opening hadn't gotten her key yet. At 9:00, all of the student workers arrived for a brief meeting--went over some of the changes that occured over the summer (forgot a couple I was supposed to mention). I went home for a couple hours and came back at noon.
Found messages that the library's circulation system had been updated with 3 new records (suprisingly low for 101 incoming students), but no time to follow-up at that point) and that the proxy user list was updated.
Monday afternoon was the time for the ISP change. This directly affected every web server (including the library's catalog system), the library's proxy server, the library's ftp computer, and every electronic subscription databases (about 8-10 different vendors that were mostly contacted for the necessary change a month earlier). This indirectly affected every library staff computer, a couple of key links on the library web site, and numerous other details.
All of these changes were very definitely noticed by both on-campus students who couldn't access the library catalog, since the IP change hadn't yet propogated and DL students trying to work around the changes to use our electronic databases for an assignment.
I had new freshmen library student assisstants working at 4:00 & 8:00, so had to take time out from chasing the various problems to get them trained on the library software and major procedures.
I left work about 9:30.
TUESDAY
Having worked past the major problems of the ISP change, I thought, I was dismayed to discover that two of our database vendors had failed to get the necessary changes. One of them I had failed to contact completely. One I thought had been notified by e-mail. Called both of them to get the necessary changes made.
By the afternoon, we had confirmed that a number of incoming students were missing from our library system--they had not been included in the update on Monday. There were also several students apparently missing from the proxy list. A couple of phone calls got those updates checked and run again with more expected results (over 100 patrons added).
I skipped clogging to relax at home and get some laundry done.
WEDNESDAY
I was able to sleep in and go in to work at noon. My day was rather broken-up.
I realize that my day has been very broken up. I had to answer questions, etc so I didn't actually get to my office until after 1:00. I work for 3 hours following up on more ISP change (and other) problems regarding the library's ftp computer, the library's proxy computer (including ANOTHER call to one of the database providers that hadn't properly made the IP changes yesterday), and answered various e-mails. Went to the weekly cabinet meeting at 4:00. I worked for another hour
following up on items brought up in the meeting and a student work schedule
issue. Made it to supper at 6:25. Came back with under two hours left in the work day. That time went quickly as I answered a couple of student questions and tried to make some progress on the piles on my desk--a rather unsuccessful venture this evening.
