My morning started off not too badly. I was running late for work, but that I was blaming on Jesse's birthday and that fact that I'd taken the time to give him a present before we left this morning.
I was within five miles of work when my car decided it wasn't having a good morning. Within second the radio died, the RPM indicator dropped to 0, random dashboard lights came on (but not oil, battery, or other lights associated with the engine shutting off), and my speedometer started fluctuating while all my car was doing was slowing down. I hit the button to turn on my hazard lights, but they didn't start blinking until after I was already pulling over and almost stopped.
A call to AAA to get a tow and--2 hours late (not later)--I made it to work without my car.
The diagnosis was a dead alternator. The part came in this afternoon. I should have my car back tomorrow morning (and be bit poorer).
The experience really reminded me to count my blessings! Even when I dropped my car off at the shop, I was doubtful that I would be getting it back by the end of the day. I had a couple more plans for Jesse's birthday, but they required a little bit of driving around. So I had to modify those plans, but I think Jesse will still have a great birthday. I'm very thankful it wasn't worse (like a wreck) and that while I had things to get done at work, my arrival wasn't time-critical (like a student waiting until I arrived so they could go to class). And I'm thankful that our budget isn't so tight that something like this is a huge burden. I'm thankful that the weather wasn't bad--on the cool side (especially compared to the last week), but not snowy or rainy. I'm thankful that I have friends that have said yes, they can give me a ride to work in the morning. I'm thankful that I don't have to rely on someone else every morning to get to work. And I'm thankful for moments like this that remind me to stop and count my blessings!
