When I arrived at the library at 8:30 this morning, my student worker informed me that our library software wasn't working--couldn't login to the software modules or access the web-based catalog. I wasn't too concerned, the server occasionally fails to reboot properly; a quick reboot by I.T. is all that is needed.
Due to various reasons, it took me 15-20 minutes before I was able to contact one of the database managers to take a look at the server. About 30 minutes after that, I received a call from our Director of Technology with "bad news." They feared a hard drive crash and were currently working with the library software vendor to confirm the problem. If it were confirmed, they would be contacting the hardware vendor to get the needed parts and work done. We could be down all day.
About 11:00, I received a call from our database managers asking me to try to login to the library software. It worked! I asked about the problem and they said something about rebooting the hardware.
I'm thankful we were only down for a few hours in the morning and hope that this problem isn't a pre-cursor to continued or more serious problems.
