The problem: 80+ boxes of books, most of which haven't been looked at in 3+ years. Only the vaguest idea of what is in them in general. Not the foggiest of what is in any of them specifically.
The project: Spend parts of 4 days (Fri-Mon, more than 14 hours) going through all of the boxes. Sort books into:
- Books to sell in book sale or otherwise move out
- Books of importance to our majors to be cataloged in the next year or so
- Books that are part of a set of books
- Everything else that goes back into deep storage until the library has more space
The result:
- 5+ boxes of books to go to book sale
- 20+ boxes of books to be cataloged in the next year or so, sorted and labeled in broad subject categories
- 5+ boxes of books belongs to sets, including an entire box of Lenin: Collected Works
- 60+ boxes of books to store until the library has more space
- The discovery of a 1798 copy of Oeconomy of the Covenants, between God and Man. Comprehending A Complete Body of Divinity by Herman Witsius. Volume II of a three volume set.
What does one do with books so old?
